What does “Sabay Sai” mean?
We spent many winters in Thailand and found the Sabai philosophy deeply resonant with us — something we often miss in modern life: a slower pace, the joy of simple pauses, and the ability to accept life as it is, with all its ups and downs. Travel, in many ways, feels like a small life in itself — and this is how we want it to go: sabai sabai.
So why “sabay” with a y? Honestly — just for SEO :) No extra philosophy here.
“Sai” is a word from the Kazakh language used to describe a dry hollow, gorge, or ravine. While traveling across Kazakhstan, you’ll see it often in place names — like Kolsai (köl – lake), Ayusai (ayu – bear), or Ermensai (ermen – mugwort).
For us, Sabay Sai describes a place where that slow-life mood lives — where you want to turn off notifications, pick up a book, and accidentally fall asleep under a tree. A place for big thoughts and quiet conversations. A place where your inner voice finally stops talking, even without meditation.
A place where you feel the real pace of life, can see the sky, touch the grass, and feel the elements.
Our mission
To collect and support the best family-run stays in beautiful, lesser-known corners of Kazakhstan — helping travelers discover unique places, meet inspiring people, and create meaningful memories.
We let families focus on growing and nurturing their place, while we help improve hospitality and connect them with the guests who will truly appreciate what they’ve created.
Our values
We choose places that are real — not polished for social media, but full of heart, soul, personality, and stories worth discovering.
We believe in slowing down, staying longer, and connecting deeper — with nature, people, and ourselves. Travel, for us, is not about rushing from one attraction to another, but about finding wonder in small, meaningful moments.
We support family-run places and community-driven projects that welcome you like an old friend — not just a random tourist. We love working with people who want to make their small corner of the world more beautiful, share it with others, and develop it for the long term.
We choose places that give back — to the land, the region, and the people who live and create there. Together with hosts, we work on making their locations more sustainable, responsible, and eco-conscious.
We’re always searching for quiet, special places that most travelers miss — the kind that stay in your memory long after the trip ends. Even locals often discover something new and unexpected in our collection.
All locations and tour providers we feature are our personal partners. We know them, we trust them, and we believe in what they do. No generic listings. No meta-search. No compromise.
We care more about what a place feels like than how it looks online. If it brings peace, sparks connection, or makes you breathe deeper — it belongs here. We’ve seen plenty of “beautiful” places with no soul. That’s not what we’re about.

Before Travel Club
Sabay Sai began in 2023 as a small family guesthouse in the Ile-Alatau National Park
We went a little crazy and rented an abandoned house with a huge plot in the national park, March 2023.
For several months, with the help of friends and volunteers, we cleaned, repaired, and built everything.
Volunteers from all over the world helped us, and dozens of new friends supported us.
With their help, we turned the house and the surrounding space into a cozy place.
We made every corner of the house feel like home with beloved items from our travels and gifts from friends.
And we began welcoming guests from all over the world into this cozy space.
We brought the area around the house back to life.
And on the site of the old unfinished building, we built a family café and bar.
Where on weekends we welcomed guests and hosted various events.
We accidentally ended up with six dogs.
And we learned to understand the local herbs and to live in harmony with nature.
Every day we welcomed guests from all over the world and learned something new: cooked Kabsa with guests from Saudi.
Discussed summer reading book list with our guests from Uzbekistan.
Showed our mushroom trail to guest from UK.
We welcomed volunteers from Workaway from Germany, Turkey, France, Italy and Russia.
And completely fell head over heels in love with hospitality.
In March 2023, we accidentally discovered a wooden house for rent in a secluded mountain gorge inside the National Park. Within a few weeks, we dropped our city life and careers, moved there, and spent three months preparing the house to welcome guests. It had three guest bedrooms and a small summer café.
Over the next two years, we hosted big families, groups of friends, couples, and solo travelers from Europe, the Gulf countries, East Asia, South Asia, and USA.
We took them with us to local bazaars, cooked national dishes together, shared hiking trails, and had long, heartfelt conversations. Along the way, we gained deeper insight into the questions and challenges travelers often face when visiting Kazakhstan.
We created personalized guides and recommendations, helped guests plan their itineraries, and assisted with organizing tours. Throughout this time, we maintained a 9.6+ rating on Booking.com and Superhost status on Airbnb.
In spring 2025, we closed the guesthouse — not because the journey ended, but because it was time to grow. We launched the Travel Club to help more people discover the Kazakhstan we love: by finding unique places, and supporting incredible local families in bringing more warmth and hospitality to travelers from around the world.
Wishing you a beautiful journey and meaningful adventures
We hope you’ll fall in love with our homeland just as we did
